Research/Scholarly Interests

  • Post harvest – storage, drying and processing of agricultural crops to reduce losses and improve efficiency.
  • Energy systems for protected cropping, especially cogeneration and CO2 enrichment.
  • Processintegration as applied to protected cropping especially water gross margins in arid zones.

Current and Previous Funded Research Projects

Working as consultant to NRI on measuring and evaluation of flash drier performance in various African countries to improve efficiency of cassava flour production. Developing heat exchanger modules to utilise palm kernel shells and cashew nutshells as substitute for oil fuel burner. The latter has been rolled out to 20 – 25commercial sites.

Anaerobic digestor design and development

DTI co-funded project with industrial partners leading to succesful design and operation of 6 cell AD unit for food waste at commercial glasshouse producer in UK. Site is now running 24/7 with biogas being burnt in MWM spark ignition engine producing 0.5MW(e), and heat utilised in LPHW heatingsystem with buffer tanks. Exhaust gas is cleaned using urea matrix and SCR and then supplied to greenhouses to increase yield.
