Reema joined the Natural Resources Institute in September 2025. She holds a BSc and MSc in Microbiology, specialising in Molecular Plant Pathology, from SRICEA Institute, Gujarat, India, and an MSc in Biotechnology from the University of Greenwich.
Her expertise spans molecular plant pathology, microbiology, biotechnology, and controlled-environment agriculture. Prior to joining NRI, she contributed to research activities within the School of Science at the University of Greenwich, supporting projects in biotechnology.
Before moving to the UK, Reema worked as a Research and Teaching Assistant at ASSC College, Gujarat, India. Her research experience includes microbial disease pathology in plants and bioremediation studies focused on improving crop quality in southern Gujarat through sustainable microbial approaches.
Reema’s research interests include molecular plant pathology, climate resilience, and understanding the impacts of climate change on climate-resilient crops. She is particularly interested in exploring sustainable approaches that enhance agricultural productivity and resilience in the face of environmental challenges.
She believes that rigorous, ethical, and impactful research can drive meaningful innovation and deliver tangible benefits to communities. Through the generation of evidence-based solutions, research has the potential to improve livelihoods, support sustainable development, and contribute to economic growth. This perspective was shaped by her involvement in a bioremediation project in Gujarat, India, where a petroleum-contaminated site was successfully restored to productive vegetative soil. The rehabilitation of the land enabled its return to agricultural use, creating opportunities for local farmers and demonstrating the positive societal impact that applied research can achieve.
As a Climate Control Technician, Reema is responsible for the operation and management of greenhouse climate control systems and quarantine facilities. She supports research activities by maintaining optimal growing conditions, ensuring environmental monitoring, and implementing biosecurity and quarantine protocols within controlled-environment facilities.
Reema was awarded the “Promising Microbiologist” recognition by Veer Narmad South Gujarat University for my scientific illustrations highlighting the adverse effects of pesticide use and demonstrating the potential of biological control strategies using the bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis. Her work emphasised sustainable approaches to crop protection and contributed to promoting environmentally responsible agricultural practices.
